Brisbane Ashtanga Yoga is a studio and community space dedicated and committed to teaching the Ashtanga Yoga method as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois of Mysore India.

 

The Ashtanga yoga method involves synchronising the breath (deep even conscious breathing) with a progressive series of postures (asana’s), this linking of breath and movement is known as vinyasa, a process that produces intense internal heat and a purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs and expels unwanted toxins from the body. During the practice we also maintain a steady gazing of the eyes (drishti) to create focus and concentration and help stabilise the mind.

The results of regular practice are improved circulation, a light and strong body & a calm focused mind. Over time this practice can become a moving meditation. The Ashtanga Yoga method places equal emphasis on strength, flexibility and stamina. 

In one of the most influential classical texts on yoga, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, you will find the Sanskrit word Ashtanga, which literally means “eight limbs.” Here Ashtanga Yoga is defined by these 8 limbs as a progressive path to self-realisation.

Yama (self restraint)

Ahimsa – non-harming
Satya – truthfulness
Asteya – non–stealing
Brahmacarya – continence
Aparigraha – greedlessness or taking only what
is necessary

Niyama (observances)

Sauca – cleanliness or purity
Santosha – contentment
Tapas – austerity or self – discipline
Svadhyaya – self-study
Isvara pranidhana – surrender or devotion

In Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga we teach that by mastering the third limb, asana — we can then provide a firm foundation from where we can explore the other limbs. These branches support each other. Asana practice must be established for proper practice of pranayama and is a key to the development of the yamas and niyamas. Once these first four externally oriented limbs are firmly rooted, the last four internally oriented limbs will gradually evolve over time.

There are 3 groups of sequences in the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga method. The primary series (yoga chikitsa) detoxifies and realigns the body. The intermediate series (Nadi shodhana) purifies the nervous system by opening and clearing the energy channels. The advanced series A,B,C,D (Sthira bhaga) integrating the strength and grace of the practice. 

Ashtanga Yoga practiced in its correct sequential order gradually leads the practitioner to a vibrantly healthy body and mind. Each posture and sequence is in preparation for the next, developing the strength, flexibility and balance required to move further into the practice.

Aaron Earley (Authorised Level 1 KPJAYI)

Aaron discovered the practice of yoga in 2007 during his career as a professional fitness trainer. He first encountered yoga to combat a tight inflexible body and to help find a cure from an illness he was suffering. Taking that first step into class little did he know that yoga would became his life’s passion, his work and his way of life.

Aaron began practicing Ashtanga Yoga with Mark Togni from the Gold Coast Yoga Centre in 2009, Mark has been Aaron’s mentor, teacher and a great source of inspiration and wisdom. In 2013 Aaron began his studies at K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (KPJAYI) in Mysore India under the guidance of his teacher and director of the institute Sharath Jois. In March 2017 after four extended annual trips to the institute, Sharath blessed Aaron with Level 1 authorisation to teach the Ashtanga Yoga method. Aaron is very honoured, passionate and dedicated about sharing this practice with the community. Through his own personal experience he truly believes in the transformational aspects of the practice.

Aaron has been teaching yoga full time since 2011 and is recognised as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (ERYT) 500 with Yoga Alliance with over 5000 teaching hours.

Aaron’s intention for creating Brisbane Ashtanga Yoga is to provide a space where students can come and learn Ashtanga Yoga as it’s traditionally taught in Mysore India. He hopes to inspire students to commit to the practice with dedication, devotion and patience. Providing a space to the Brisbane community where we are working on improving our physical, mental and spiritual health through this transformational practice of Ashtanga yoga. A community gathered together in pursuit of the truth is referred to as Satsang.
